The year 2020 will be one for the history books. The COVID-19 pandemic has infected 73.5 million+ people worldwide, including a reported 1.6 million+ deaths. In the U.S. alone, there have been 16.7 million+ reported cases, including over 303,000 deaths. Beyond the health crisis, the economic impact of this pandemic will play out for years to come.
However, the tech industry and the U.S. stock market have been booming to unprecedented levels. Companies have raised a record $149 billion via IPOs this year. This number has been supercharged by 235 SPACs that have raised ~$79 billion. Per the Economist, “some $800 billion of equity has been raised in 2020 [worldwide] by non-financial firms, the highest sum on record.” The Dow topped 30,000 for the first time and not to be left behind, the US VC fundraising has surpassed a record $69 billion in 2020.
